Bolognese (or ragù alla bolognese in Italian) is a pasta sauce that originated in the Italian city of Bologna. It is a thick, meaty sauce made from ground beef, tomatoes, onion, carrot, celery, garlic and red wine. The sauce is cooked slowly and flavored with herbs, such as oregano, thyme and basil.
The history of bolognese sauce dates back to medieval times, when a similar sauce was known as "ragù". This sauce was originally made from game or poultry and was served with fresh pasta. In the 18th century, the inhabitants of Bologna began to use ground beef instead of game, and the sauce began to evolve into the Bolognese sauce as we know it today.
Bolognese sauce is now one of the most popular pasta sauces in the world and is often served with spaghetti or tagliatelle. The dish is loved for its rich, savory flavor and versatility, as it can be adapted to personal taste preferences. Plus, the sauce freezes well, making it a convenient option for busy weekdays. Today the vegetarian version!
