I always have a box of frozen cranberries in my freezer. These are now available all year round and not just a Christmas product. You may also know the juice as a remedy to avoid cystitis, but that is unfortunately not true. It does have a certain bitter taste that not everyone likes. So we don't add too much in this cranberry grapefruit thyme Dry January mocktail.
Mocktails are non-alcoholic drinks that retain the complexity and creative aspect of cocktails, perfect for those who enjoy mixed drinks without the buzz. The sweetness in this mocktail recipe comes from the thyme syrup, which you can easily make yourself. I will make a recipe for that later. If you cannot easily find this syrup in the store, you can also use honey as an alternative. The taste of thyme provides a surprising twist here, just like in many classic cocktails where herbs are often essential seasonings.

Thyme and cranberries are therefore attributed quite a few medicinal properties. Thyme is good for digestion and thyme honey is good for a sore throat. Thyme contains the substance thymol, which is good for the respiratory tract. Pure cranberry juice is quite sour, actually some sweetener is always added to make it drinkable for people. I always try to buy it as unsweetened as possible.
I like it sour myself, but you can always add some extra syrup or honey. You can prepare this mocktail recipe well. If you have provided the glasses with the sugar rim in advance, you can then store the glasses in the refrigerator. This way it hardly takes any effort and time to make the card later.

Ingredients:
- 1 grapefruit
- 4 el thyme syrup - (may also be honey) + extra for the edges
- 4 el cranberries - from the freezer compartment / freezer box
- 8 el crushed ice cubes
- 2 cans of grapefruit tonic - from Spa
- fresh thyme sprigs
- 50 gram granulated sugar
- 200 ml cranberry juice
Nice and easy: click on the logo of your favorite supermarket to add the ingredients.
And this is how you make it:
- Cut the grapefruit in half and cut off one slice for decoration. Squeeze the grapefruit further and keep the juice.
- Take two saucers and spoon the sugar on one saucer and some thyme syrup or thyme honey on the other. Turn the rims of the glasses first through the syrup, then through the sugar, so you get a nice decorative edge.
- Scoop a spoonful of thyme syrup (or honey) into each glass with a spoon and drop the frozen cranberries on top. Top up with 2 tablespoons of crushed ice per glass.
- Divide the grapefruit juice between the glasses, the cranberry juice and fill the glasses with the tonic. Finish with a sprig of thyme and a slice of grapefruit and serve!
- Cheers!
