Calling myself a huge go-getter is going a bit too far, but I don't just shy away from a challenge. So when I was challenged by Liesbeth Booij and Fittergy to de vegan switch challenge, I didn't expect to get it all the way. But strangely enough during the challenge I got better and better at the goal and I managed to resist all temptations. Why not a go-getter! The vegan switch challenge

What exactly is this challenge? The goal is actually to detoxify your body for ten days. Have you ever heard of those juice cures where you can only drink vegetable juices? In this challenge you eat a lot of vegetables. You switch in a number of reduction days to then four full days vegan, and therefore plant-based days. Then you build up again with the last two build-up days with a small amount of animal proteins.

That sounds good right? I received all the information and recipe book at home and I started reading it for a week. Just to be well prepared and to be able to make my shopping list. I also kept my agenda as empty as possible so that I wouldn't get in the way of completing this challenge completely.

Please note that during this challenges eat a huge amount of vegetables. Now I live quite rural and I always do my shopping once a week. So I cleaned up the fridge and made an extra crate in the pantry for all these products. Fittergy also gave the handy tip that it is best to use frozen products for your smoothies, for example. Choose organic products because they have not been sprayed. And therefore also the goal of this challenge: to detox!

The dismantling days

The first four days you will therefore slowly reduce your animal products. No more milk or butter, some meat and fish, but otherwise a lot of vegetables, legumes and fruit. There are a few guidelines that are helpful to follow to get the best results.

  • Eat all your food within 10 hours.
  • Try to move a lot, at least 60 minutes every day.
  • Go to the sauna or in a hot bath at least once.
  • Drink plenty of water, at least 2 liters per day.
  • Sleep 7 hours a night.

For example, fun facts and trivia are given per day in the recipe book to keep you motivated. I clearly discussed with Liesbeth in advance what I should and should not do so that I could get off to a good start. And along the way, she certainly came up with nice encouragements to keep me motivated.

De vegan day

The days I dreaded the most! In the end, it really worked out for me. I even cooked chicken for the rest of the family and didn't eat any of it. Nice is of course different because it smelled very good! For me it worked very well to “prep” everything well in advance. That way everything was ready and I didn't have to think too much about it. From the start of the challenge I actually lost some weight every day which is of course a nice side effect.

The changes in my body

To say that I felt very fit, no not really. The first two days I had a big headache, which is to be expected with a detox. I actually only felt fitter at the end of the challenge. Apparently my body needed a bit longer to get used to it. As for the weight loss, I expected a little more from that myself. The total amounted to -2,5 kilos. Which in itself is not bad of course. My skin certainly glowed, I think the amount of water and not drinking coke and other sugary drinks has certainly helped a lot.

Am I now fully convinced vegan? No, definitely not, I personally think that's too big a step to take. So what did I get out of this challenge? Firstly, that I appear to possess enormous perseverance. I followed the entire challenge and all the rules neatly. Secondly, a much greater awareness of what I put in my mouth every day. After this challenge I will therefore definitely make some changes in my eating pattern. And this will come as a shock to some people because I'm known as a meat eater, but more vegetarian and vegan days will definitely be planned.

I can recommend you to take on this challenge anyway, even if it is to step completely out of your comfort zone. In this way you may gain certain insights about your diet and lifestyle.
