Although I love pizza, you won't see me ordering a Hawaiian pizza anytime soon. I am a big fan of the classic margherita pizza and always stick to it. But when it comes to sandwiches, I love the combination of cheese, ham and pineapple. It's just a perfect combination of flavors that go well together. When I thought about it, I thought it would be fun to make a version without bread. Of course you can serve it with a nice piece of baguette to put the meat on, but we kept it simple and just served it with a fresh salad. Because of this we kept it a bit low-carb, but still able to fully enjoy this delicious dish. Here is the recipe for a buttery soft Hawaiian ham. You start by roasting the ham on the bone and then add delicious herbs to flavor it.
A buttery soft Hawaiian ham
For a little context and history, let's talk about the origins of the Hawaiian pizza and Hawaiian sandwich. Hawaiian pizza was invented by a Greek man named Sam Panopoulos, who ran a restaurant in Ontario, Canada with his brothers. Inspired by the sweet and sour flavors in Chinese cuisine, he invented the Hawaiian pizza in the 60s. The pizza is topped with tomato sauce, cheese, ham and pineapple, a combination that is not appreciated by everyone.
Interestingly enough, German TV chef Clemens Wilmenrod invented a ham and pineapple sandwich way back in 1955, long before the Hawaiian pizza was invented. This raises the question of who was actually the first to come up with this idea and when exactly this was recorded. So it's a bit of a chicken-and-egg situation.
Although the Hawaiian pizza and the Hawaiian sandwich are loved by some people, there are certainly opponents of these well-known dishes. Some people enjoy it, while others just don't throw the dish in the trash. Anyway, it remains an interesting story behind two popular dishes.
Here you will find the complete recipe with all the ingredients you need. I hope you have fun preparing the dish below.

- Cut the ham crosswise on top.
- Take a small bowl and add the agave syrup and the two types of mustard. Add the juice of the fresh pineapple. Mix the whole into a smooth marinade and coat the whole ham with it.
- Place the ham in an oven dish and let it bake in the oven and baste every now and then with the liquid in the oven dish.
- During the last 10 minutes, sprinkle the cheddar cheese on the ham and let the cheese melt completely around the ham.
- Cut the pineapple into small pieces and place on a serving platter.
- When the ham is cooked, remove it from the oven and place it on top of the pineapple chunks. Let rest for a while and then cut with a sharp knife into nice thin slices.
- Delicious bites!
