A buttery soft Hawaiian ham

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

Although I love pizza, you won't see me ordering a Hawaiian pizza anytime soon. I am a big fan of the classic margherita pizza and always stick to it. But when it comes to sandwiches, I love the combination of cheese, ham and pineapple. It's just a perfect combination of flavors that go well together. When I thought about it, I thought it would be fun to make a version without bread. Of course you can serve it with a nice piece of baguette to put the meat on, but we kept it simple and just served it with a fresh salad. Because of this we kept it a bit low-carb, but still able to fully enjoy this delicious dish. Here is the recipe for a buttery soft Hawaiian ham. You start by roasting the ham on the bone and then add delicious herbs to flavor it.

A buttery soft Hawaiian ham

For a little context and history, let's talk about the origins of the Hawaiian pizza and Hawaiian sandwich. Hawaiian pizza was invented by a Greek man named Sam Panopoulos, who ran a restaurant in Ontario, Canada with his brothers. Inspired by the sweet and sour flavors in Chinese cuisine, he invented the Hawaiian pizza in the 60s. The pizza is topped with tomato sauce, cheese, ham and pineapple, a combination that is not appreciated by everyone.

Cut the ham crosswise so that the flavors can penetrate well into the meat.

Interestingly enough, German TV chef Clemens Wilmenrod invented a ham and pineapple sandwich way back in 1955, long before the Hawaiian pizza was invented. This raises the question of who was actually the first to come up with this idea and when exactly this was recorded. So it's a bit of a chicken-and-egg situation.

Although Hawaiian pizza and Hawaiian toast are loved by some, there are certainly also detractors of these well-known dishes. For those who love them, the combination of sweet pineapple and savory ham offers a unique and delicious taste sensation. On the other hand, there are those who consider this combination a culinary disgrace, preferring to enjoy the traditional versions of pizza and toast without exotic additions. Some people enjoy them, while others are just about to throw the dish in the trash, often expressing their disapproval on social media or in lively conversations with friends. Either way, it remains an interesting story behind two popular dishes, which not only influences our taste buds, but also the way we think about food and culture. The debate about their value piques the curiosity of many and ensures that these dishes, despite their divisiveness, have a lasting place in our culinary world.
