- 16 slices of cheddar cheese
- 1 canned tuna - e.g. water-based, drained weight approx. 160g

- 4 tablespoons butter
Nice and easy: click on the logo of your favorite supermarket to add the ingredients.
And this is how you make it:
- We bake these toasties as pan toasties. So we need a good frying pan.
- Chop the onion, chop the gherkins, and cut the bell pepper into small cubes. Add everything to a bowl with the mayonnaise, drained tuna, and season with salt, pepper and some chopped parsley.
- Spread the bread slices with butter on the outside. On the inside, you cover the sandwiches with two slices of cheddar, a layer of tuna salad, again two slices of cheddar and then the top sandwich on top.
- Heat the frying pan and fry the toasted sandwiches on both sides until golden brown.
- While we bake, the ones that are ready can be kept warm in an oven, but serve immediately afterwards.
Why Sustainable Tuna is Important
On May 2 it will be the 5th WTD. What is that then I hear you think? The United Nations (UN) has decided to celebrate May 2 as World Tuna Day. Since 2017, this day has been used to reflect on tuna fishing. And that is not to make us eat more and more tuna, but rather to think about making the catch more sustainable. Fishing is under pressure, tuna is a popular fish and improvements are being sought to prevent this fish from becoming extinct. Fortunately, the number of MSC certified fisheries is growing. This helps enormously when choosing sustainable fish. Whether you choose fresh, frozen or canned. Also with this grilled tuna sandwich with cheddar. Because that's the recipe you get from me on this WTD, and so we can celebrate the day with this tuna melt tuna sandwich. canned tuna

Tuna, there is more than one species!
Tuna is a popular and widely eaten fish. There are areas in the world where fishing for these large fish is the only source of income. The entire trade in tuna represents almost 30% of the total world trade in fishery products. Did you know that there are about forty species of tuna? They belong to the mackerel family and swim in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans, but you can also find tuna in the Mediterranean.
The fish is a warm-blooded fish and has pink flesh, you probably know it from your sashimi and sushi. We mostly know the bluefin, bigeye, yellowfin and skipjack tuna which represent a catch of about $42 billion! Compared to 2019-2020, the global tuna catches included in the MSC program have doubled. So things are slowly moving in the right direction in this industry.
Opting for sustainable
As a consumer you can indeed play a major role by making conscious choices. Because the reality is that some tuna is not doing well at all due to overfishing. There are different types of capture methods, each of which has a different impact on marine life. One tuna is certainly not the other! Choosing MSC-certified tuna guarantees your fish traceable from boat to plate. Nearly 30% of global tuna catches are now MSC certified and the majority of commercial tuna stocks are at healthy levels, with supply growing rapidly.
So there is plenty of fish that you can buy with confidence. It helps to make it more sustainable and you can find this fish in abundance in Dutch supermarkets. Your choice of the right tuna helps that process. With this purchase, you therefore reward the companies that are committed to less bycatch and a sustainable piece of fish on your plate.
