Grilling is a very tasty way of preparing your vegetables. White cabbage is actually very little on the menu here. Every now and then a nice coleslaw, but otherwise not really. Time to change that because white cabbage is excellent for roasting in the oven. Of course we make a nice sauce with it, otherwise it is a bit bare. And in this case we make grilled white cabbage with curry sauce. Yes, you could easily make that sauce from a package, but it's so much better to make it yourself. I wrote there before the recipe ahead on my blog, so we can use it here. We do add some extra raisins so that it really becomes a nice sweet curry sauce. white cabbage recipes recipe
Grilled white cabbage with curry sauce
Curry comes from India. The Indonesians also liked to use it and this is how it ended up in the Netherlands. The word curry actually means sauce. We owe it to the English who misused the word and christened it “curry”. Curry powder is actually a mixture of different types of herbs and spices.
There is no specific recipe for this because of course everyone has their own version of curry. But often you will certainly find ginger, turmeric, cumin, coriander, cardamom, cloves, and pepper. There is also a red curry, which contains peppers and the redder the hotter the curry! Note that the Dutch version of curry is not nearly as spicy as the Indian version.
Here you will find the complete recipe with all the ingredients you need. I hope you have fun preparing the dish below.

For the sauce you will need:

Nice and easy: click on the logo of your favorite supermarket to add the ingredients.
And this is how you make it:
- Preheat your oven to 200 degrees.
- Take the cabbage and cut it in half. Leave the middle part that the leaves are attached to intact. This keeps the leaves from falling apart. Cut off 4 to 5 wedges from both halves. Blanch them in boiling water for 5 minutes and then drain carefully. (that is why it is also important that you do not cut away the middle where the leaves are attached).
- Place the cabbage wedges on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Drizzle olive oil over the leaves and sprinkle with the persillade. Place in the oven for 15 minutes and then turn the cabbage pieces over. Then another 10 to 15 minutes until the edges get a brown color.
- While the cabbage is in the oven, we make the sauce. Take the pan and melt the butter in it. Add the flour and all the herbs and spices. Cook for two minutes and then add the milk while stirring. Keep stirring until you have a nice thick sauce. Add the raisins and place the pan on a simmering plate until ready to use.
- Place the white cabbage wedges on a platter or serving board and pour the sauce over them.
- Delicious bites!
