Nowadays when I travel I check in advance what the local cocktail is! Because in addition to local food, there is also plenty to drink locally. So I turned to the web to find out if Hamburg has a classic to its name. And behold the gin basil smash cocktail! A green monster of a potion...the hulk is nothing. The inventor of the drink himself states: 50 ml of gin per glass is not enough, 60 ml is the recipe and 70 ml is for the die-hards!! He, Jörg Meyer first shook this drink into the world in the summer of 2008 as “gin pesto” but became known as gin basil smash. And a smash, well with so much alcohol, that's what he gives…. a good one for the real gin-lovers.
Gin Basil Smash Cocktail
The creator of the refreshing drink Jörg indicates that it is important to use enough basil in this gin basil smash cocktail. He recommends crushing the leaves thoroughly with a muddler before shaking them together with the ice.
Therefore, make sure you have all the necessary cocktail utensils, such as a shaker, muddler, strainer and glasses, at hand, so that you can prepare everything smoothly and make a delicious cocktail. Also, don't forget to add some extra basil leaves for a tasteful decoration, as they not only improve the presentation, but also add an aromatic touch to your drink!
You could also serve this cocktail as a virgin if the alcohol percentage is a bit off to you. Alternatively, you can simply buy alcohol-free gin and the preparation remains the same. This means you can still enjoy the same taste and aromas, but without the added alcohol.
Here you will find the complete recipe with all the ingredients you need. I hope you have fun preparing the dish below.
