Harissa chicken with agave syrup

Harissa chicken with agave syrup

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

I already posted recently the recipe for homemade harissa. A very spicy sauce from Tunisia that you can easily make yourself. Well, I would have done that, but then you also have to do something with that sauce... A piece of chicken is ideal because it doesn't have too much flavor on its own. At least the fillet we are talking about here. A lean piece of meat with a lot of protein, but could use some extra! Well that worked out very well with this harissa chicken with agave syrup.

In this case I chose chicken fillet because it has slightly less fat than chicken thigh. But it can also be made with wings, drumsticks, or even just smear the inside and outside of the entire chicken. The fresh harissa can be kept in the refrigerator for a few days.

Serve this harissa chicken with agave syrup with some steamed vegetables and some rice, for example. The chicken can of course also be “prepped” for several days. For example, if you make 4 pieces, you can prepare your lunch in containers. Then you can put different vegetables in each container, and you still have a versatile lunch with a different taste each time.

You need:

Ingredients:

  • 300 gram chicken breast
  • 2 twigs Parsley - (or coriander)

For the marinade/sauce you will need:

  • 3 toes Garlic - squeezed
  • 1 el harissa
  • 1 el soy sauce
  • 3 el agave syrup
  • ½ citroen - squeezed
  • 1 tl cornstarch
  • salt
  • peper

Nice and easy: click on the logo of your favorite supermarket to add the ingredients.

And this is how you make it:

  • Cut your chicken fillet crosswise, spread with 1 tablespoon of harissa and place in an oven dish.
  • Preheat your oven to 200 degrees.
  • In a bowl, mix 1 tsp harissa, 3 tbsp agave syrup, 1 tbsp soy sauce, 3 crushed garlic cloves, and the lemon juice. Pour this over the chicken fillet.
  • Cover the dish and place in the oven for 20 minutes. (until your fillet is cooked, but certainly not dried out!)
  • Remove the chicken from the oven and the dish and set aside. Mix 1 tsp cornstarch with some water in a bowl and add it to the sauce in the oven dish. Mix well to create a slightly thicker sauce.
  • Place the chicken fillet back in the dish and brush well with the thick sauce. Place back in the oven to reheat the chicken. Remove the chicken from the oven and cut into nice strips and sprinkle with some freshly chopped parsley, then serve immediately.
  • Delicious bites!
