If you had asked me five or even ten years ago if it would have been possible for me to market my own spice jar, I would have smiled at you. I have been buying persillade jars in France for years. So after every holiday I carry a bag full home with me. But those days are over! I recently posted an entire blog about making this mix myself. I gave you the recipe, which will also remain on the website! But after that, my persillade love gained momentum. Because suddenly there was Chris van Van Beekum spices! We got together and looked at the possibilities to get my Delicious Happen Persillade on the market! And that is a small "dream come true". For all those people who, like me, carry pots from France with them, it is now a lot easier. Now just here for sale in the Netherlands!
Van Beekum spices
After an initial telephone conversation with Chris van Beekhuizen, we came to the conclusion that it was quite possible to have them produce my own persillade. Chris was immediately very enthusiastic about this collaboration. He really liked the idea of adding my mix to their private label line. Of course I wanted to see everything with my own eyes and see how it would be produced. So I jumped in the car to Ermelo to meet the whole family and see the company.
Family business
Because that is what it has been for many years: a family business. Grandpa, father and two sons working side by side in the company. Van Beekum has been around since 1908 and started selling butcher shops. Later on, herbs and spices were added. In 2004 the company is taken over by father Edwin van Beekhuizen. An enormous growth quickly arises and the building moves from Hierden to Ermelo. This building has now also become too small and another move is imminent. Chris also finds his place by taking on the entire webshop and opening the market to the private customer. And that's where private labels come into play. Because here as a company you get the opportunity to put together your own spice mix. With your own label on the jar, your own composition of herbs and spices.
Food Safety
Upon arrival at the building, the smell of herbs and spices immediately greets you, nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper, clearly hard work is being done here! Hygiene is taken very seriously here because I am immediately put in a jacket and get a very charming hat on my head. Super important of course Chris explains to me, because they are also strictly checked. They are therefore very proud of their FSSC 22000 certification, which is recognized worldwide. I even get a look at the mixing room where all the spice mixtures are made. Grandpa van Beekhuizen is filling bags and can still be found in the company almost every day.
Test 1,2,3.....
In advance I passed on to Chris what I would like to have in my mix and in what proportions. And then it's testing. We make a first bag of persillade and look at the structure and I make some dishes with it at home. Not quite to my liking, we are making a second version and I can say with certainty that this is what I want. And then there must also be a label on the jar, not unimportant. Fortunately, it is possible to work with the colors that I myself have been using since the beginning of Delicious bites. Purple and light green. I will be sent a sample. Here too, a bit of work still needs to be done on the color scheme and then the final result comes to me: perfect!
