Ciao ragazzi! Stracciatella, one of the most famous Italian ice cream flavors! But did you know that this flavor actually hasn't been around that long? It originated in 1962 in Bergamo in Northern Italy in a café called 'La Marianna'. It was invented by Enrico Panattoni. When making ice cream, he added melted chocolate at the end. Contact with the cold ice caused the chocolate to solidify, breaking and mixing with the ice cream! So it is super easy to make. I would like to share the recipe for homemade Italian stracciatella ice cream.

What does the word straciatella actually mean? It means “shredded or torn”. The chocolate is, as it were, shredded in the vanilla ice cream. Dark chocolate is a favorite for this ice cream, but you could also make it with milk chocolate.

You need:

ice machine

Ingredients:

  • 600 ml Full Milk
  • 100 gram dark chocolate
  • 250 ml whipped cream
  • 250 gram sugar
  • 1 vanilla

Nice and easy: click on the logo of your favorite supermarket to add the ingredients.

And this is how you make it:

  • Heat the whipped cream and milk in a pan
  • Then add the inside of the vanilla pod, the vanilla pod and the sugar
  • Cook on low heat for 5 minutes and stir well with a whisk. 
  • Then let cool completely
  • Pour the mixture into the ice cream maker and let it run for at least 45 minutes
  • In the meantime, chop the chocolate into pieces and add it in the last minute.
  • Scoop the ice cream into a container and let it rest in the freezer for at least 2 hours before eating it.
