We then continue our journey and stop in Portofino. A small coastal town on the Ligurian Riviera, close to my family's hometown. But this small coastal town is not just any Italian town. It is one of the most expensive places in Italy with luxury brand shops, chic hotels, gigantic yachts of Hollywood stars and very special ice cream. At the bottom of this blog I share with you the recipe for Italian paciugo ice cream from Portofino.
Portofino: the pearl of the Mediterranean, city of dolphins.
Portofino used to be called Portus Delphini, the City of the Dolphins, by the Romans, because of the large number of dolphins that used to swim there. But even today you can regularly spot a dolphin in Portofino. This makes it one of the few places in Italy where you can find a dolphin.
Tiny Hollywood
It has barely 600 inhabitants, but it still overflows with tourists in high season. If you go on holiday in Liguria, a visit to Portofino cannot be missed. In the 50s, the town was discovered by many Hollywood stars, which gave it a lot of fame. Elizabeth Taylor, Madonna, Brad Pitt, Barbara Streisand, Denzel Washington, Leonardi di Caprio, Kim Kardashian, Ringo Starr and Robert de Niro have been spotted at the famous 'Piazetta'. George Clooney even has a berth for his huge luxury yacht and can be found there regularly. It is not surprising that the houses in Portofino are among the most expensive in Italy.
A visit is not complete without a 'paciugo'
Fortunately, portofino isn't just for Hollywood stars. It is also a very nice city for the 'ordinary tourist'. Enjoy the beautiful houses, the beautiful harbor and the azure blue sea. In addition, Portofino has a beautiful lighthouse where you can reach via a very nice walking path.

But the best thing about Portofino is still the 'paciugo'. This is a specialty that you will only find here. This ice cream coup was conceived in 1941 by the owner of the famous cafe Excelsior which was located on the famous square. When a customer asked her what it was exactly, she didn't really have a name for this coupe. So she answered: 'È un paciugo!' Literally: 'It's a mishmash'. Everyone liked this name so much that it was renamed a 'paciugo'
Now that we can't travel that much, I want to bring the paciugo to the Netherlands by sharing the recipe with you. Although it is a medley, it is simple to make and very tasty! If we can travel again and you are in Portofino, you should definitely take such a 'paciugo'. This mix of a few scoops of ice cream and fruit costs about 10 euros, but yes it is and remains Portofino!
Here you will find the complete recipe with all the ingredients you need. I hope you have fun preparing the dish below.
