Today I have a delicious recipe for you: Italian calzone with Spanish sausage. A calzone is a kind of folded pizza that you fill with all kinds of goodies. I opted for a filling with Spanish sausage, mozzarella, tomato sauce and basil. A delicious combination of flavors that reminds you of a sunny holiday.
I love pizza, but sometimes I don't feel like going to a restaurant or ordering a takeaway pizza. I prefer to make my own pizza in my own kitchen. It's not at all difficult to make your own pizza dough, and you can top it with whatever you like. A calzone is even more fun to make, because you can keep the filling nice and surprising.

Make Pizza yourself
For this recipe I used Spanish sausage, also called chorizo. This is a spicy sausage that gives a lot of flavor to the calzone. Of course you can also use another type of sausage, such as salami or ham. Or you can omit the sausage altogether if you want to eat vegetarian. For example, you can add extra vegetables, such as mushrooms, peppers or spinach.

The nice thing about a calzone is that you can fill it all the way to your own taste. For example, you can also add cheese, pesto, olives or pineapple. It's your party! The only thing you have to watch out for is that you don't make the filling too wet, because then the dough will become too soggy. And that you close the edges well, so that the filling does not run out.

I made this calzone for my family and they all loved it. My husband loved that the calzone was so well filled, and my kids loved guessing what was inside. We ate a nice salad with it, and so we had a complete meal. It was like being in Italy!
Here you will find the complete recipe with all the ingredients you need. I hope you have fun preparing the dish below.

Ingredients:
- 1 role Pizza Dough
- 2 balls mozzarella cheese
- 10 slices thinly sliced chorizo
- 10 slices serrano ham
- 6 tablespoons tomato sauce
- fresh basil leaves
- grated cheese
Nice and easy: click on the logo of your favorite supermarket to add the ingredients.
And this is how you make it:
- First preheat your oven to 210 degrees.
- Then add the roll of pizza dough. I buy these in the fresh section of the supermarket. Roll it out and then cut the dough in the middle. Because this roll will be a right angle I made small rectangular Italian calzones and not round ones. Italian calzone with Spanish sausage
- Take the tomato sauce and spread a few spoonfuls of tomato sauce on both halves.
- Then place the sausage slices on top of the tomato sauce.
- Cut the mozzarella into small cubes and pat it dry a bit so that it doesn't get too wet when you fold the pizza.
- Finely chop some fresh basil leaves and place on top of the cheese. You don't have to use salt because the meat and cheese are salty enough on their own.
- Place a sheet of baking paper on a baking tray and then the Italian calzones with Spanish sausage on top. Fold them closed and press the edges well so that no air can escape.Italian calzone with Spanish sausage
- Sprinkle some grated cheese on top of the Italian calzone to decorate the pizza a bit, then they can go in the oven for about 20 minutes. Keep an eye on them that they don't burn
