Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

Easy cooking, maximum results with minimum effort. I hope that your love for slow cooking can be sparked a bit with this delicious recipe of chicken in tomato sauce from the römertopf. Because if we are talking about no effort at all and a top result, then it is cooking in this 70s pot! Don't have that thing at home? Then quickly run to your nearest second-hand store. There you will often find never used toppers for a few meager euros. Romertopf chicken casserole

Because people have no idea what to do with it and that is such a shame. You soak those ceramic bowls in cold water for an hour, throw everything you feel like in it and then so cold, hop into the oven. Wait a few hours and then: perfection in a bowl. We are going to start with the preparation of Chicken in tomato sauce from the römertopf.

Chicken in tomato sauce from the römertopf
Delicious, the whole chicken just fits right into the römertopf.

Chicken in tomato sauce from the römertopf

The use of the römertopf dates back to the time of the Romans. Because they had already mastered firing in earthenware dishes well. How does that work? Good to read before you start preparing Chicken in tomato sauce from the römertopf. Soaking the bowl in cold water will make it wet. Then you fill it and put it in the oven cold. So you basically have an oven within an oven. During the baking process, that water evaporates and the dish actually steams.

Fill, and then hop into the oven cold and wait.

The product will not burn in a römertopf either, because the shell retains the moisture and protects the meat or vegetables from the direct heat. For a crispy crust on top, you also have to remove the top dish at the last moment and turn the oven up. Ideal for baking something tender and juicy in a few hours at a low temperature. I put it quietly at 150 degrees for about 3 / 4 hours in the oven and let the römertopf do the work. In the meantime you can really do anything, such as reading, exercising or cleaning. Ideal actually.

Season well the night before, that gives extra flavour.

Here you will find the complete recipe with all the ingredients you need. I hope you have fun preparing the dish below.

You need:

Römertopf

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole kip
  • chicken seasoning
  • 3 mature tomatoes
  • 2 witte onions
  • 1 tray Cherry tomatoes
  • 1 package past
  • 3 toes Garlic

Nice and easy: click on the logo of your favorite supermarket to add the ingredients.

And this is how you make it:

  • Start the night before. Season your chicken well, including the inside!
  • Soak the römertopf in a bucket of cold water for an hour.
  • Cut the onions into quarters, finely chop the garlic and slice the large tomatoes. Place this on the bottom of the römertopf.
  • Place the chicken on top and top with the tomatoes, then add the passata to the bowl. ( I used about 100ml )
  • Place the römertopf in a COLD oven and set the temperature to 160 degrees.
  • Now let it cook for an hour or two (two and a half is also possible).
  • Remove the lid for the last 15 minutes and increase to 200 degrees to give the top a nice crispy skin.
  • Place the chicken on a serving platter and cut into pieces.
  • Delicious bites!
Serve with a tasty pasta, the sauce from the römertopf you just use with the pasta.

This blood orange chicken from the romertopf.

But also this one bean stew with pork chop is great.

And a rabbit leg also cooks perfectly this way.
