Cooking workshop Surinamese noodles

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

Let's go back in time a few years… About 20 years to be exact. Francine, then 18, moves into her first apartment in the big city. And after some relocations within Rotterdam, I finally live in Rotterdam-West. On the Nieuwe Binnenweg between the toko's, Surinamese and Antillean eateries and here I learn to eat noodles. I didn't cook that much myself, that only came years later. And here's the reason to give this cooking workshop Surinamese noodles right now. Because as good as I ate it there, I couldn't do it at home! Time to ask a pro to teach me this!

Looking for a real pro

And so the idea arose to ask a real Surinamese to teach me how to make these noodles. But why just me? I now know plenty of other foodies who also like to cook. I cannot accommodate a large group at my home, so the first point was to find a suitable location.

Fortunately, I have good contacts at the Keuken Kampioen. They made a showroom with a fine kitchen available to me. I eventually ended up with Jennifer through a call on Facebook. I sent her a message and then we had to wait and see whether she would be interested in this too.

The one and only Jennifer!

Surinamese cooking with Jen

Fortunately, Jennifer was also very enthusiastic right away! Jen is a lovely Surinamese ladies, just as you would expect her to be. Very cordial, a chef who cooks by feeling and a woman with whom you immediately feel at ease. And busy bee she is: with a cookbook published entirely under her own management that is already going into the 5th printing! If you want to learn more about Jen, take a look here. take a look at her site.

The workshop

Of course, enough had to be arranged afterwards to ensure that the event could actually take place. We planned a date and I invited 12 enthusiastic food bloggers to participate in the workshop. And on December 9, the time had come. Everyone trickled in and after a nice round of introductions in which everyone also shared their plans for the new year, we all got to work. Of course you had to cook! Jen had brought her dear mother Yvette with her. And he assisted us in making the pickles. A Surinamese noodles can of course not be missed!

Cook by feel, Jennifer says and add spices just the way you like it

the noodles

In groups of three we prepared all parts of the noodles cooking. Making the pickles, marinating the chicken and turning and frying the noodles in the wok. We all filled a delicious tray that could be taken home. Of course there was enough to have a bite to eat together and to end the pleasant afternoon. Nobody went home empty-handed because there was also a nice goodie bag ready for everyone.
