The hype is born and we are all diving on top of it! Am I tempted? Or am I not doing it? In any case, I share a nice recipe of spicy curry with sweet potato in this blog.

Food hypes on social media

I was recently interviewed for a survey of some high school students. They asked me, among other things, what I find most annoying in the food scene. I immediately knew what my answer would be, because at that moment there was another mega hype going on. And to be honest I hate hypes. 

There have been so many food hypes over the years that I'm actually a bit allergic to it. Somehow I understand some hypes, if it is a new product or a new dish. However, some hypes I do not understand. Those are hypes such as eating avocado or sweet potato every day. Don't get me wrong, I'm sensitive to it too. But why is there always such an enormous excess?

Avocado, indispensable

Apparently someone once started by mashing an avocado and then spreading it on a cracker. That didn't happen at my house. I just ate a cracker with cheese or jam. Yet somewhere in the world someone picked up an avocado, mashed it up and ate it on a cracker. Did he actually secretly have some leftover guacamole, and put it on his cracker? Because to be honest, an avocado in itself tastes like… well, very little. 

Anyway, these are age-old foods that are suddenly popping up everywhere and often have to be "super healthy" right away. Also take the sweet potato. When I lived in England (I lived there in my childhood), sweet potato was a standard option in the school cafeteria. So why is it suddenly something that appears everywhere and in every form?

The sweet potato is actually very versatile!

Then get over it….

I don't know if I really hate it, because eventually I will be intrigued to a certain extent with the question: "is it really that great?" or “so healthy?”. Perhaps it irritates me the most, that the hype somehow makes me curious. Of course, that's how it works with everything in life. Everything that is promoted generates interest in some way. That is no different when it comes to nutrition or if you take it further to lifestyle. 

Oh well, now there is always a bag of sweet potato in my vegetable drawer, I sometimes eat a cracker with avocado and I replace my pasta with zucchini. Hypes they get me too 😉 sweet potato recipe

You need:

Ingredients:

  • 400 gram chicken breast
  • 2 sweet potatoes
  • 2 red pointed peppers
  • 1 Red onion
  • 2 shallots
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 75 gram pink lentils
  • 300 gram rice
  • 400 ml coconut milk

Nice and easy: click on the logo of your favorite supermarket to add the ingredients.

And this is how you make it:

  • Chop the onion, shallots and crush the garlic. Cut the bell pepper, sweet potato and tomatoes and chicken breast into cubes.
  • Heat some oil in a wok or frying pan. Saute the garlic and add the chicken breast. 
  • Fry over medium heat and add the onion and shallots. Bake for 5 minutes. Add the herbs and spices and some salt and pepper. Bake for a minute or 2 so that the herbs and spices are well combined.
  • Add the rest of the vegetables and sweet potato. Fry the vegetables for a few minutes.
  • Then add the coconut milk and the lentils. Stir well. Let the curry simmer for 20 minutes over medium heat. 
  • Meanwhile, cook the rice. Serve the curry with rice and perhaps a naan bread. 
  • Delicious bites!
