New Orleans muffuletta sandwich

New Orleans muffuletta sandwich

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

The Big Easy, that's the nickname of the city of New Orleans. Located in the south of America, in the state of Louisiana. Cradle of gospel and slave music and a mix of inhabitants. Carnival is celebrated here every year. You may know it as Mardi Gras. The New Orleans muffuletta sandwich is a sandwich with Italian roots. Italian immigrants from Sicily took their round Sicilian sesame bread recipes and made their own version of it. This Muffuletta sandwich is made with an olive salad. Part of this is the Chicago style Giardiniera that we have already made. muffuletta sandwich recipe

A fair amount of meat, cheese and Giardiniera.

This way these recipes come together nicely, and you have a taste explosion on a sandwich. I used Italian bulbs for this. As is often the case, this Muffuletta recipe is also controversial because several people claim to have come up with the recipe. Either way, this is a real “jaw-breaker” of a sandwich!

This muffuletta recipe is made separately from the Giardiniera! You can also make the olive salad in a larger quantity. This tastes great with your lunch or as a side dish with your meal. After this muffuletta sandwich you won't be very hungry anymore. It really is quite a filling sandwich! As you can read in the recipe, I made this New Orleans muffuletta sandwich with Italian buns.

By the way, you could also use a large round Turkish bread for it. Or, of course, bake the Muffuletta bread yourself. Then you are on the road a little longer by letting the dough rise. So I prefer something easier to bake off bread.

Here you will find the complete recipe with all the ingredients you need. I hope you have fun preparing the dish below.

  • 4 Italian dumplings
  • 300 gram mortadella - to stick
  • 300 gram salami - to stick
  • 400 gram provolone - to stick
  • 300 gram pastramic - to stick

For the olive salad:

  • 100 gram green olives - chopped
  • 100 gram Chicago style giardiniera - see recipe on my website
  • 1 shallot - XNUMX onion - shredded
  • 2 el capers
  • 3 roasted red pepper - from jar, finely chopped
  • 2 el Red wine vinegar
  • 1 el Italian spice mix

Nice and easy: click on the logo of your favorite supermarket to add the ingredients.

And this is how you make it:

  • Make the olive salad with all the ingredients from the list above. You can chop the Giardiniera even finer.
  • Bake the Italian dumplings and let them cool down for a while. Cut in the middle and spoon some olive salad on both halves.
  • Line the sandwich with the salami, mortadella, provolone, pastrami and press the top on well.
  • Delicious bites!
You can put a heavy bowl on top of the buns with a foil in between so that the buns are slightly crushed. That might eat a little easier
