In Italy they have a saying: 'La vita inizia dopo il caffe' … life begins after coffee and that is really the case there! In this blog I will take you into the kitchen and we will brew coffee. I also share the recipe Italian crema al caffè with you. A delicious coffee recipe that is easy to make, and which can be drunk (or actually spooned) cold. coffee recipes
Italians and their traditions
As with many culinary dishes and traditions, Italians are extremely proud of their coffee. Many well-known coffee brands therefore also come from Italy. Think Segafreddo, Lavazza and Illy. Italians also have little to do with foreign coffees. It therefore took a long time (in 2018) before a Starbucks branch opened in Italy. The most beautiful Starbucks in the world is located in the fashion city of Milan, that's for sure! I think this is also the only city in Italy where you can find a Starbucks.
Coffee rules in Italy
So a lot of coffee is drunk in Italy, but there are of course a number of rules about drinking coffee. Here are some do's, don'ts and fun facts:
- Coffee is often drunk standing at the bar, especially in the morning.
- Coffees with milk such as latte macchiato, espresso macchiato and cappuccino are no longer drunk after 11.00 am.
- It is in any case not done to order a cappuccino or latte macchiato after dinner. This is seen as an insult to the cook. After dinner they drink an espresso.
- If you order a 'caffè' (or coffee) in Italy, you get an espresso. A coffee as we know it in the Netherlands is in Italy a 'caffè americano' (an American coffee) and that is simply an espresso with hot water. Very few people drink this….
- If you want a Latte macchiato in Italy, order a 'Latte macchiato' as well. If you ask for a 'latte' you get a glass of milk.
- When you are in Italy, order an 'affogato al caffè'. That's an espresso with a scoop of ice cream, very tasty!
- In Italian households, coffee is still often made on the stove with a percolator.
- A coffee that I always really like is a crema al caffè. A creamy cold coffee that can be enjoyed in both summer and winter and is very simple to make! Here under the recipe Italian crema al caffè: coffee recipes
Crema al caffè is an Italian coffee specialty prepared with espresso and whipped cream. The result is a thick, rich and sweet coffee that is often served as a dessert. Crema al caffè is prepared by making espresso and then folding in the warm, whipped cream. It is often decorated with chocolate or cocoa and is considered a luxurious and sophisticated drink.
Here you will find the complete recipe with all the ingredients you need. I hope you have fun preparing the dish below.

Ingredients:
- 200 ml whipped cream
- 50 ml coffee - 2 cups of espresso
- 20 gr granulated sugar
- 2 mocha beans
Nice and easy: click on the logo of your favorite supermarket to add the ingredients.
And this is how you make it:
- Place a mixing bowl (preferably glass or stainless steel) in the freezer an hour in advance.
- Meanwhile, make the coffee. Mix it with sugar and let it cool (in the fridge).
- Remove the mixing bowl from the freezer and add the whipped cream. Beat the cream with a mixer until it thickens slightly.
- When the cream thickens, add the coffee and whisk further.
- Make sure you don't whip it into very thick whipped cream, as you normally would. It should be a creamy cream, so slightly thinner than whipped cream!
- Place the mixing bowl back in the fridge and let it set for at least an hour.
- After the cream has set, pour the cream into a coffee cup or into a prosecco glass and garnish with a chocolate bean if desired.
- Tip: put the coffee cup or prosecco glass in the freezer for a while before pouring the cream into it.
this blog “Recipe Italian crema al caffè” is a contribution of Tim from La Cucina Di Tim. We virtually cross with him through Italy and have already visited a lot of beautiful places. And very nice to know: the journey is far from over! In the coming period we will therefore discover many more beautiful Italian classics. A few highlights where we have already stopped:
- Italian torta di Mele, or Italian apple pie!
- Homemade ricotta, super easy.
- Genoa, where we learn to make real Italian pesto.
- Roma, where we make a delicious gnocchi.
- Portofino, for the best ice cream.
