Shepard's pie with celeriac

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Shepard's pie with celeriac has traditionally been a "poor man's dish", because it was made with leftovers meat. Today it is one of the standard dishes which you can find in almost any English or Irish pub. By the way, there is a difference between the shepards pie and the cottage pie. That difference is in the flesh. Shepards pie uses minced lamb and cottage pie uses ground beef. But you can also use veal or mutton. And when it comes to vegetables, you can also vary a lot. Get started with this delicious shepards shepard s pie with celeriac.

Shepard's pie with celeriac

I used a forgotten vegetable in this shepards pie and it gives a nice flavor to the dish. The surprise in the mashed potatoes is in the use of some mustard. And you can use a sharp mustard for that!

And this is how you make the Shepards pie with celeriac:

-First take a pan and put water with some salt in it, and then boil the potatoes for 20 minutes. (peeled potatoes)

-While the potatoes are cooking, we get to work on the filling. Clean the carrot and celeriac and chop them into small cubes. Also chop the white onions and the garlic.

-Take a heavy-bottomed frying pan and add the minced meat, gently crumble the minced meat with a spatula. Add the onions and garlic first, then the chopped vegetables. Cook for a few minutes and then add the passata. Season with salt, pepper, rosemary, a dash of Worcestershire and finally add the field peas. Let the whole thing cook over low heat.

-When the potatoes are cooked, make a puree with some butter and a dash of milk. Season the puree with salt and pepper and 2 tablespoons of mustard. Mix it all together well.

- Grab your oven dish and first put the minced meat mix in it, then spoon the puree on it and press it with a fork and draw some nice lines.

-Place in the oven under the grill and let the puree of the shepards pie brown nicely.

    1. Hi Kirsten, the Shepards pie only needs to go in the oven to go under the grill. So you don't have to set it to a certain temperature. So just turn on your grill. How long that depends on how quickly your grill browns the top layer. I hope this answers your question. Gr Francine
