World food day Den Bosch

Estimated reading time: 7 minutes

Last Saturday I visited the World Food Day Den Bosch. A free event to create awareness around the theme of food security. Created by the United Nations in 1979. This is to draw attention to the food problem that exists all over the world. It is so unfairly distributed. On the one hand, more than 821 million (!) people are hungry, but on the other hand, more than double that number are overweight. During this event you can talk, watch, experience and let yourself be inspire to ensure that things will get better everywhere.

Food cabinet

Food cabinet is the campaign agency that works on a more sustainable, fairer and healthier food system. They organize events, fun campaigns and workshops. Everything to get consumers moving about their food and thinking about food choices. After I had previously worked for one of their campaigns, they asked me if I wanted to attend this event. And of course I couldn't say no to that! Renee provided the first small tour and introduction to this great event. They also already arranged tickets for a workshop so that my spot was assured and I could get started myself. But I didn't come alone because children are also more than welcome at this event

The mini tour

World food day Den Bosch

After the opening of the event by the Mayor of Den Bosch and Marijn of the TV program Keuringsdienst van Waarden, a small group gathered at the podium. And then you will always see that another nice Foodie shows up. In fact, Kelsey from the food blog Kuukskes was already there. We started the tour at the blockchain experience of Verstegen Spices & Sauces. The chain tells the story of the nutmeg from plantation to the jar. We also got to taste a delicious spicey ice cream with nutmeg. So you could see that it really takes some steps before we can season our food with all kinds of herbs and spices.

The second stop was at the Hihgh Tea Hang Out. There Evelijne presented us with the story behind the Moringa tree. The Hunger project brings this "wonder tree" back to the attention with the support of the National Postcode Lottery. Moringa is a tree known for its high nutritional value and medicinal properties. These are in the leaves and fruits of the tree. These leaves are used in Ethiopia, Malawi and Uganda to combat malnutrition. We were allowed to drink a cup of tea with the moringa powder and they also baked a delicious cookie with it. A very inspiring story!

The third stop was at "Super the future". A kind of supermarket of the future to see what we might eat in the future. Maybe a pulled guinea pig sandwich, or plum tomato soup. All with a wink to make us aware that technology is advancing and the way we eat is also subject to change. All this is a concept of the “eat art collective” of de Volkskrant. On the other side they had put two nice bicycles with which you could charge your phone while cycling. And so my daughter Jools cycled only 4 percent on her phone!

The last stop at World food day Den Bosch was at the photo presentation and Keynote by George Steinmetz. You may know this man as "the flying photographer", he has been working for National Geografic for over 30 years. If you want to see more of his work, follow him on Instagram under @feedtheplanet's account. He flies to the most remote places on earth, or to hard-to-reach places to show us what is happening on earth. And that these are sometimes shocking and bizarre images. Things that we don't think about every day but that actually happen. Afterwards I had a chat with George when I bumped into him, and luckily my private paparazzo Kelsey was able to take a picture.

cooking shows

On the big stage, several cooking shows were also given that day by the various toppers. For example, Master Patissier Hidde de Brabander made a beautiful chocolate cake. He also told the story of the chocolate he works with. ! Chocolate with an honest origin. I spoke to Hidde for a while before he had to start and of course a selfie could not be missed. At the end of the afternoon the cooking show with, among other things, a delicious hummus from Nadia Zerouali of 24 Kitchen.

Workshops World food day Den Bosch

As I wrote at the beginning of this blog, there was certainly plenty to do for kids! I attended two workshops with my daughter Jools. We made a delicious shrimp cocktail under the guidance of the HealthySisters. Two nice ladies who gave it a Moroccan touch with the delicious Ras El Hanout herbs from Euroma. And at the second workshop we learned how to make a beautiful figure in the cappuccino. This was given by coffee roaster Da Silva. And unfortunately the day was too short to participate in all the workshops, which I think is very good, because there is something for everyone to do.
