Zeeland food bloggers lunch
“Back to my roots”, as you already in the weekly vlog passed by I was invited to Zeeland to come for a Zeeland food bloggers lunch with real Zeeland products. Both my grandfather and my grandmother were born on the island of Tholen and therefore Zeeland blood flows through my veins. Known for the mussels, holidays in Renesse, and of course Blöf, everyone has an image of Zeeland. But it is perhaps less known that there are many more beautiful products that come from Zeeland soil. And to bring some extra attention to these fantastic regional products, I went to Bruinisse for lunch in Zeeland. This is then again on Schouwen-Duivenland. A long drive from Brabant but hey blood flows where it can't go so I went back to my family's homeland. On to the Zeeland food bloggers lunch
Definitely Zeeland
This day was organized by Martine from the food blog “de Zeeland Foodie” and Karin from Zeker Zeeuws. This is an independently recognized regional quality mark that guarantees that a product is really Zeeland. If you see a stamp on an article, you know for sure that it has been grown, farmed, fished or produced with Zeeland raw materials. Whether it comes from the land or the sea, it is definitely Zeeland!
The lunch
And if you have a whole group of bloggers visiting, you will of course also need good space. Especially if you are also going to let them eat a nice lunch. My navigation directed me towards Bruinisse to the marina. There we were welcomed by Fleur and her team from the Sailor's Inn brasserie. Right on the water and with a view of the sea and the boats.
The sun was shining that day, but it was much too cold to sit outside, and luckily when we arrived the fireplace was already burning nicely. The table was already nicely set and the bubbles were cold. And that's where the first surprise came for me. A Zeeland bubble! A brut de Zélande from Wijnhoeve De Kleine Schorre. Now with a vineyard of over 10 hectares!
Fish must swim
After a round of introductions around the table with some familiar and some unknown faces to me, we started lunch. And here I started with a bit of a false start because the first dish was... you guessed it: Zeeland oysters... And if there's one thing I'm not a fan of, it's oysters.
But I didn't let it fool me and I tasted one. Fortunately, the chef had dressed them with some salsas and that gave the oysters an extra flavor. So we drank the bubble.
The Intermediate Passage
And then a very nice bowl arrived on the table! Real Zeeland mussels with a lot of spice from the chili and Thai basil. It warmed the food blogger in me. And because lighting was once again not entirely optimal in a restaurant, I picked up my bowl and quickly went outside... And there with the boats in the background I took a beautiful photo of these mussels. This way they come into their own with a lovely sun on the plate.
The wine we got with the mussels also came from the Kleine Schorre. It is a Rivaner (grape variety) and matches perfectly with these shellfish. On the way to Bruinisse you will pass all kinds of mussel farms. Large blue barrels with underneath them float in the water Mussels hanging on ropes. They call this “hang cultured mussels”. So they hang and do not lie on the floor. This ensures that they have a richer food supply and therefore taste better.
The main course of the Zeeland food bloggers lunch
On the map I had already seen that we have a stew got it and that made me happy. And in this dish there are three different companies that ensured that this stew had an explosion of flavor. Meat from Boot meat farm, delicious red beets from Nieuw Leven Farm, and mustard from Spennekot. I sat at the table next to the owner of this mustard company and in no way does this man bear the name “stout Zeeuw”. It's wonderful to be able to chat with passionate people who put their heart and soul into their companies.
Brouwerij Vermeersen spoiled us with a very special beer with this stew. This beer bears the great name “Kapitein Rooijbosch Yokohama”. This is due to the cry emitted in Zeeland: Jo Ko Ha Ma. Or the Captain called on his crew Jo and Ko Dees to go ashore in Japan. The hitherto undefeated Japanese named their village Yokohama after this order out of respect.
Fruity ending
And all fun must come to an end and so does this Zeeland food bloggers lunch. The closing was a very nice combination of apples and pears. Delicious caramelized pears in a delicious cake with sweet nut pesto and an apple cider from De plantage from Kruiningen. I can only say that I really enjoyed all Zeeland products. Chef Marco Verspeten did justice to all products during the Zeeland food bloggers lunch in the various dishes. Then it was time to leave the Zeeland islands and go home to Brabant. I sniffed some sea air at the dike and took one last photo. Fortunately, I got a nice goodie bag to take home to enjoy this fantastic afternoon at home for a while.
