For the section Francine at I went to a restaurant for the first time. A nice restaurant here in the region with a funny concept: a meatball restaurant! Of course I have eaten here regularly myself and therefore thought that it would be a super nice item for this section. A look into Marieke's kitchen and find out where her passion for meatballs comes from. So that's why Francine at Bal Dadig!

The beginning:

Delicious burger

Marieke grows up in a real entrepreneurial family. Work hard but enjoy a Burgundian way of life. Enjoy delicious food with the family at long tables in France and at home. Spending time together around the table and enjoying good food. Later, Marieke marries Willeke, also a real catering tiger. Willeke also has a restaurant in Woudrichem: Het Oude Raedhuys. Unfortunately, both restaurants are now closed.

From the entrepreneurial mindset of the family, Marieke is going to study and not at a catering school, but she is going to study economics, Marieke tells during this Francine at Bal Dadig. In the end, the blood crawls where it can't go. The desire to have his own restaurant takes shape in Marieke's head. She would like an accessible, cozy restaurant where everyone is welcome. A place where everyone can come and have a nice bite to eat. To make this dream come true, she naturally obtains all the diplomas to be able to run her own catering business. And so her dream can begin.

The start of Bal-dat:

The entire start-up of Bal-aard was a bit of a search for what suited her personality and her wishes. First looking for the right location, that was quite a challenge. The concept for what has now become Bal-delijk also had to be examined to see if it would fit in the region. To take a good look at what it could all be, the ladies traveled to New York. There they took a look at the Meatball shop. Having returned to the Netherlands with enough inspiration, a beautiful building became available in the heart of Woudrichem. That's where Bal-dat had to come! Marieke did want to be accessible to everyone, so there are also some other delicious bistro dishes on the menu.

The Balls:

When I ask Marieke about her cooking background, it turns out that she is a real self-made chef. With a lot of testing and tasting and cooking she learned the profession of chef. Of course supported by the chefs in her wife's restaurant and other chefs from the region who are more than happy to advise and assist. In the beginning, each ball was turned and made by hand. More than 100 kilos of minced meat per week rolled through the hands of the ladies. Looking for the perfect ball with the right recipe. After a lot of testing and turning, it turned out that turning the balls manually gave too much quality difference. One rolls slightly differently than the other…. And also the hands could use some rest.

The perfect ball:

To make sure that every ball tastes just as good and is rolled beautifully as every other ball, Marieke went looking for a solution. She found this in a collaboration with La Boucherie in Made. A butcher shop for the better restaurants. These are in possession of a beautiful machine that makes the balls. Marieke discusses with the butcher what types of meat she wants for the balls and with which recipe. For example, only fresh products and herbs are used to guarantee the quality of the balls. And so she has her own unique balls with her own recipe that are freshly made for her. And don't you feel like a ball but a burger? That's possible: they simply “beat” the ball into a delicious juicy burger!

The location of the restaurant in this Francine near Baldat is in the old city center of Woudrichem. Some people can recognize it from TV because Doctor Tinus was shot in this town. Walled by beautiful city walls, it is worth a visit for that alone. With the ferry you can take a trip to Slot Loevestein and there are fantastic cycling routes through the region. There is nothing better than sitting on the terrace afterwards with a cold drink and a nice ball. For example, they regularly receive reservations from people from Amsterdam or even further away to come and eat a nice ball here.

As versatile as Marieke herself is, so is the range that Bal-dat has to offer its customers. For example, work-shops spinning balls can be done. The ball tour has also been created, a wonderful tour through the region in a real tuk-tuk. You can also rent a separate part of the restaurant for a nice drink or even a Ballen-Wedding. Everything in a cozy ambiance and casual atmosphere. The restaurant is decorated in a homely atmosphere and it is as if you walk into someone's living room. Daniëlle Lievaart, an employee from the very beginning, is ready to give you a nice table.

All in all, this Francine at Bal Dadig was definitely worth it. If you're ever in the area, you should definitely go there for a bite to eat! Children are more than welcome and can expect a delicious ice cream with a nice present, which they can choose for themselves in the large iron cupboard. As the greeting on the door says: Goodbye and the Balls!
