The blood orange is a unique fruit known for its beautiful red color. This color is caused by the production of anthocyanins, a substance that is also responsible for the color of, for example, red cabbage. Anthocyanins become active when the temperature varies between hot and cold. This is why the blood orange grows especially well on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. Just like here, they have cold winter nights there, but they can enjoy plenty of sunlight during the day.
